árbol-
antena

in collaboration with Rodrigo Ríos Zunino

bosquemuseo

árbol-antena is an intervention at bosquemuseo – located on top of the Calan hill, where an old astronomical observatory coexists with degradated native flora–. The project explore the interconnection and energetic communication among vegetal species, minerals, energy fields and antennas; being all them inhabitants of this place. Built from a dry trunk (agave flower) found on site, which was replanted and intervened with a copper coil, the piece becomes an artifact that intercepts and transmits signals and electromagnetic waves captured on site, being activated and feed by the sun and its energy. This tree-antenna also plays the role of a "gnomon" or solar marker which aligns itself according to solar and andean coordinates of calendrical-ritual importance, thus projecting the shadow on the ground according to alignments traced on it.

Plants, minerals, water, and also objects from our technologically formed environments, the so-called technosphere, such as cables, metal frames, loudspeakers or monitors, are combined to form an entangled mechanism. In the process, various places, times and sensitivities come together (...) The different elements react with each other as energy bodies. They serve each other mutually as amplifiers and microphones, and thereby attain a new kind of perception and legibility. A quartz stone is wrapped with copper wire, becoming an antenna that enables us to hear spectra and voices. Plants become cables transmitting energy. As bio-indicators, their sensitivity for certain combinations tells us about how places are constituted-stinging nettles, for example, grow on deprived soils while their pain-killing effects hint at the possibilities to heal the human body and also the earth as a body. The technological and biological elements enter into a symbiosis that shows their complexity and sensitivity beyond their reduction to exploitable resources. In a kind of alchemistic communication, the different elements become tangible as sensitive bodies. Visitors can interact with these elements and feel themselves part of this communication system where technological, plant, and human forms of expression cross and combine to make a new world of connections and signs.

umbra

Polygonal Forest  - Ars Electrónica Gardens 2021

An experimental film created within an area of conservation in the Andean Araucanía that combines footage taken with trap cameras, recordings of the umbra during a total solar eclipse and of the entities and sacred “temples” that make up the natural landmarks of this forest, intervened with 3D modelings of weather data. By means of a visual, contemplative and poetic language that intertwines the ancestral and the technological, Umbra seeks to interconnect visions between the ground and the sky, between sleep and wakefulness, the visible and the invisible. An audiovisual immersion into the hidden aspects of a forest in search of subtle, critical and above all invisible cycles of light and dark; of life, death and regeneration that make us part of the nature we inhabit.
